5 Principles To Building Better Nursing Job Ads (applichathealthcare.com)
Principles To Building Better Nursing Job Ads
You may know what it’s like to spend time writing a job ad, only to get zero applications. You’re then left pondering ‘what did I do wrong?” Ultimately, perfection is a lot of little things done right. In this article, we’ll go through the foundations of a good job ad, and demonstrate how simple works.
1) Know your audience
Know the demographic you’re wanting to connect with and speak to them. Make notes when interviewing or visit nursing forums.
Here’s an example. With recession looming, many hospitals are cutting agency spend. Rates for travelers are dropping. Many nurses want to finish what started with covid. How could you appeal to this audience? Boasting about pay isn’t the answer. Think about what they want to be better: work/life balance, stability, and belonging. Then, talk about how you can provide just that.
2) Choose an enticing, relevant headline
Try and get your candidates saying ‘yes’ as they read through each line. For example what is a traveler more likely to want?:
“Join Memorial Healthcare’s Mission of Care in Massachussetts”
“Tired Travel Nurses: lay roots in the heart of Massachusetts’ idyllic countryside”
The headline is your one chance to grab attention and keep them reading. Don’t waste it, and make it specific. This is why Youtube ‘list videos’ are so popular. ‘Easy to digest’ short-form information is far more efficient than long-winded prose.
3) Sell the role: use ‘candidate-centric” language in the body of your ad
JFK voice: ask not what can the candidate do for you - ask what you can do for the candidate. You’re not listing a appealing features of a job, nor are you describing generic ‘positives’ of a particular employe. Elaborate on how such things are of particular benefit to the nurse. Tuition Reimbursement Programmes are wonderful, but why? Because they provide the candidate an opportunity to further their knowledge and develop their skills whilst earning. Aways link things back to the individual reading your ad. This point keeps coming up in our webinar interviews with healthcare leaders.
Final Thoughts on Building Better Nursing Job Ads
It is useful not to overthink your job ads when writing them. We can all attest to reading cumbersome, confusing or vague posts on job boards, so we know what to avoid. The focal point of your ad should be the reader and they want to know precisely why your job will benefit them. Keeps things concise, specific and ultimately candidate-centric!
