What Does a Nurse Technician Do?

A Nurse Technician, often referred to as a Nursing Tech or Nurse’s Aide, is a healthcare worker who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs). While not a licensed nurse, a Nurse Technician has received training to assist with direct patient care tasks. These tasks can include taking vital signs, helping with hygiene and daily living activities, assisting with mobility, and providing comfort to patients.

Nurse Technicians often work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, or outpatient clinics. They play an essential role in the healthcare team, offering support that ensures the smooth running of the nursing unit and enhancing patient care. They also often serve as a key communication link between patients and nurses, helping to relay important information about patient conditions and care.

Typically, a Nurse Technician will have completed a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program or be enrolled in a nursing education program, gaining hands-on experience while completing their studies. Their work is foundational in the day-to-day operations of healthcare environments and in providing compassionate care to patients.
